In the latter half of the twentieth century, fast food exploded in popularity across much of the world, and that trend has continued well into this new millennium. With busy lives, people are turning to cheap, convenient fast food options instead of more traditional meals. This essay will argue that the disadvantages of this greatly outweigh the advantages.

Fast food may be cheap and convenient, but it has already had a devastating effect on our world. In the countries where fast food is most common, the health care services are overwhelmed by related health problems such as obesity and diabetes. These problems are directly related to the ubiquity of fast food in our modern society. People who eat fast food frequently suffer a wide array of health problems, and even die at much younger ages than their counterparts with healthier dining habits. There are simply no advantages that can compare to this monumental negative impact.

Aside from the obvious health issues, fast food is changing our society for the worse. People are becoming lazier and losing the ability to cook for themselves. In many Asian countries, young people are simply not taught to cook by their parents because it is so cheap and easy to go out and buy food – or even to have it delivered to the house. Not only does this rob people of important life skills, it takes away an important human bonding experience. Families eat together less frequently, and children don’t have the experience of cooking or baking with their parents like they did in the past. No level of convenience is worth this sort of loss.

In conclusion, fast food has had a tremendous negative impact upon our world, and although there may be some benefits to this, the negative factors significantly outweigh the positives.
