I think exams are an adequate technique of testing students. Firstly, exams are organized so that all students are in equal conditions. They take exams at the same time, in the same classroom and students are offered the tasks of the same level of difficulty.

Secondly, final exams allow revealing the most talented students who can benefit from displaying high results. For instance, they may enter prestigious universities and get a discount for a tuition fee. It proves that exams are a fair form of testing students and gives better opportunities to the best.
However, other people are sure exams cannot be seen as a reasonable method of monitoring students’ level of knowledge. They are convinced stressful atmosphere at exams makes some students feel so nervous that it is absolutely impossible to perform well.

I cannot fully agree with my opponents. It is common knowledge the less one knows, the more nervous one becomes at exams. Moreover, modern classrooms are equipped with surveillance systems, so the possibilities to cheat are minimized.
