In some parts of the world, juvenile delinquency is becoming a severe issue today. It is believed that minors who perpetrated serious offences should be punished the same way as grownups. To my way of thinking, such measures will not solve the problem and will lead to new crimes. This essay is aimed to oppose this view providing relevant arguments.

One cannot deny that parents are responsible for actions committed by teenagers. Many researchers hold the view that most of the crimes perpetrated by minors were because of circumstances in the family. Unfortunately, the influence of surrounding people is extremely strong and it can easily change the immature psyche of youth. Thus, this makes it clear why underaged cannot take the full liability even for serious offences.

There is no doubt that the prison environment will leave irreversible consequences in the life of a teenager. For example, according to previous studies in the USA, forty percent of juvenile prisoners could not find a job after they were released. Indeed, even after leaving prison, it is hard for former felons to socialise, continue studying and return to the usual way of life. Therefore, adolescents cannot be convicted as adults, as it will affect the rest of their lives.

In conclusion, it should be emphasised that teenagers should never receive the same punishment as adults. The negative impact of immediate family and then prison environment can simply destroy the whole life of a young. Eventually, this may encourage juvenile delinquents to commit crimes repeatedly.
