1. What happened in ch. XXVIII – XXXIII? Give a brief account of the events.

The 28th chapter starts with Walter and Kitty’s journey. The author described some details about how their trip was going. They were bored in chairs; they set out at dawn and travelled till the heat made them find shelter in an inn, then they went on again. A great amount of text consists of Kitty’s feelings. At that moment her mind was as empty as her life. During their trip silence was the only noise as though neither Walter nor Kitty said a word. She was permanently thinking over her conversation with Charles. She thought that the way she had broken him the news had to be different.

She had an idea that there had been a chance that he wouldn’t have left her if she had made him see her boundless love. She wept very often. She asked herself about why Charlie didn’t love her and even supposed that it was her fault. She was broken.

From time to time Walter formally spoked with her. She got used to it but didn't understand what was in his mind. She thought about his love for her and guessed whether it had passed or not. She couldn’t believe that Walter would ever lose his passion for her, but his behaviour proved the opposite. She wasn’t sure that he loved her the way he had been doing before. Till they reached the coast she had been sure that her participation was only a joke.

Her bearers were walking silently, but all of a sudden they started talking, and one of them tried to catch her attention with a gesture. She saw the gates on the top of the hill. In a few minutes when she saw a graveyard, it became clear that the destination was near. The bearers unexpectedly jumped as near to the wall as they could. In a moment she understood what they were afraid of. Fours peasants passed bearing a new coffin. Kitty’s could feel her heartbeat.

The next chapter starts with the acquaintance of Kitty and Waddington, the Deputy Commissioner. He thought that they wouldn’t like to go to his place after such a long trip, so he ordered dinner at their house. Judging by his manner of speech and chattering she understood that he wasn’t quite sober. He said that being there had been boring for him since the previous missionary died. He talked about various things. Then he asked about Townsend. He was interested if he was going to become Colonial Secretary. Kitty felt herself blush, but her husband didn’t give her a look. Walter looked quite indifferent, he found this man an amusing creature. Then he took himself off and Kitty noticed that his eyes were shining more than ever.
